Shirley: I’m Shirley Pierce; I work for Miraca Life Sciences. The girls noticed that I had started to lose weight and they started questioning me on what I was doing. I said boot camp, and then they wanted to start a boot camp here at work.
So I scouted a few boot camps in the area, wasn’t pleased with what I saw. Then I remembered Hut from New Wave Fitness, from many years ago, so I contacted Hut and he came over, did a presentation for us, and the rest is history.
Hut: Great. So tell me a little bit about your group and just the variety of people that are doing boot camp right now.
Shirley: They actually range in age from late 20s up to their mid 60s. We had a guy that was really, really shy. He couldn’t do one push-up. He started the latter part of the first boot camp and now he can do 20 military push-ups. He’s our fastest sprinter and he loves it.
Some of the women have lost pounds. Most of them have lost inches, me included. I went from a size 14… I just got into a size 8 pants!
They love it, they love it.
Hut: And why do you think they love it?
Shirley: Because we work as a group. We encourage each other. We challenge each other. We love Cameron because Cameron pushes us and we have fun. We have one fun day. On Thursdays we work out but we also play games, so we compete against each other.
I would say that you want to look for someone that’s certified, like New Wave Fitness. They not only help us with our fitness but with nutrition. You want to work with someone who knows how to motivate and encourage people.
Hut with New Wave Fitness is flexible with us. He came out, he did an excellent presentation before our Director of Facilities. I just think you need to really scout around because there are a lot of companies out there that are just in it for the money; they don’t really care about the people.
