Are You Getting Enough Vitamins?

Men’s Health® published an online article recently entitled The Power of Habit. It brings out the fact that we all have bad habits, but shows how it’s possible to break them and still survive. One of the bad habits mentioned, for men especially, was not getting enough vitamins:

Can we get the nutrients we need from food alone?

Yes, it’s possible…but ask yourself, How many servings of fruits and vegetables do I eat per day? Is my diet well balanced? Without a well-balanced meal plan that’s rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, we are probably lacking proper nutrition.

While many adults may have every intention of eating a healthy diet with foods high in minerals, vitamins and key nutrients, most don’t get enough.More than 90% of Americans fall short of the recommended levels of key essential nutrients needed for bodies to function in good health.

Whether it’s lack of knowledge, time or desire, the diets of even the most health-conscious are often nutritionally incomplete. We need a proper multivitamin to fill in some of the missing parts.

How does sunlight factor in?

Surprise – we also need sunlight for our bodies to convert vitamin D into a usable form. So if we’re not getting enough sun because of:

  • our geographic location
  • taking certain medications or other reasons to avoid it
  • fears of skin cancer
  • or just because we’re indoors most of our lives…

…then a vitamin D supplement is essential.

Vitamin D helps to keep bones strong, and can also help boost our immune system and overall feeling of well-being.

How do you know if you’re not getting enough vitamins?

Here are some common signs from Healthline.com:

  • Brittle hair and nails
  • Mouth ulcers or cracks in the corners of the mouth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Poor night vision and white growths on the eyes
  • Scaly patches and dandruff
  • Hair loss

  • Restless leg syndrome

The most important thing is, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, or you’d like to see how you can improve your vitamin & mineral intake, see your health professional right away.

In order to treat our bodies in the best way possible, we need to give them what they need, which is exercise, rest, self-care, and proper nutrition.
