February 2012 Fitness Success Story

“My name is Manisha; I’m from Plano, Texas. Back in high school and college I was an athlete, so staying in shape was super easy. After I went to medical school and residency, it all pretty much fell apart. I tried all sorts of different things to get back in shape and none of them were working because they weren’t structured like they were before.

So I was tired all the time. I felt like I looked like crap all the time. I just was getting desperate to do something. When we had our son, we knew we had to set a good example as far as staying in shape and having a good lifestyle.”

See how Manisha is accomplishing her goals of staying in shape and living a healthier lifestyle, then continue reading her story below the video:

“Before I got with y’all, I was trying to do pretty much what everyone tries to do. I’ve always been a member of a gym and I’ve been a member of a gym for a long time. I had a trainer a few years back, but after a while, he was more interested in being on his cell phone than actually training me, and it became not very motivating.

I tried P90X, which worked for a little bit, but again, it’s not the same as having someone right there pushing you the whole time. I was always skeptical about a trainer because, like I said, my previous experience was only so-so. I figured it would work for a little while, but then it would taper off.

The most important thing I’ve noticed isn’t the 10 pounds of total fat I’ve lost or the muscle I could see I’ve put on, or my clothes fitting better—the best thing is how much energy I have to go to work. I work nights, then days, then nights…I’m usually flat on the floor, exhausted, drinking energy drinks. Now I have  one cup of coffee and thanks to this workout that I do with my trainer here, I’m ready to go all the time. I feel great.

We’ve discussed supplementation. We’ve discussed when to eat, how much water. All that has really helped and he keeps me accountable.

The hour I have with my trainer is the best hour of my whole day. What’s changed is I feel better all the time. I sleep better. I’m in a better mood. It’s just completely changed my life—I have to say that.

Nothing is the same as having someone come to your home, one-on-one attention, focused. No one can want it for you, but this is the easiest you can make it for yourself.” www.NewWaveFitness.com

Worried? Advice from Jack LaLanne

“What? Me worry?” If you’re a connoisseur of MAD magazine, you’ll remember that quote from innocent-looking Alfred E. Neuman, but it mainly applied to his attitude toward the consequences of his mischief.

Today we tend to worry about lots of things–finances, job, health, crime, family, the unknown–so the advice that Jack LaLanne gave on his TV show one day really hits the mark:

Now to put it into practice! How many worries that you have control over can you eliminate from your life? Think of how much better you’ll feel. Jack LaLanne was 96 years old when he died in 2011–most likely a man who tried not to worry. www.NewWaveFitness.com

4 Tips to Starting 2012 on a Healthy Foot

Start 2012 on a Healthy Foot

1. Get Organized. Getting and staying healthy requires you to seamlessly integrate a LOT of things into your life. That’s why being organized is key. You’ll need to plan and    prepare your meals in advance… get your gym clothes ready for the following day… make sure you allow yourself time to get your workout in, etc. Sounds basic, but so many people fail to do this. Subsequently, they never reach their fitness goals.

2. Create a ‘success’ environment. Clear your kitchen and living spaces of any temptations. If you have high-calorie foods you love that are accessible with just a few steps, chances are you will give in. Avoid this in the first place by making sure your house only has healthy, body-transforming foods.

3. Find ways to deal with stress. Stress can literally put a screeching halt to all your goals. It can cause you to emotionally eat, skip workouts, and more. So start now by learning better ways to cope and deal with stress. Better yet, incorporate a daily stress-reduction program that works with your schedule.

4. Get accountability and support. No big journey should be undertaken all alone. Getting help along the way is critical to staying the path, even when things get tough. Find friends who can keep you accountable. Join a group of like-minded people you can go to for support when things start to get a little hectic. Every mega-successful person you read about had a little help along the way. Give yourself the same advantage. www.NewWaveFitness.com

Many diets also leave you feeling deprived, hungry, and finding time to prepare a healthy, nutritious meal can often be a real chore.

The Key to Getting What You Want this Year

The Key to Getting What You Want

Slow and steady wins the race!

It’s a New Year and it’s time to hit the ground running! This year, I don’t want you to give up on all the goals and resolutions you’ve set for yourself.

That’s why in this month’s main article (which is REQUIRED READING), we talked about procrastination and what you can do to sidestep it in order to make sure you move toward your goals on a regular basis. But there is something else you need to do. In fact, it’s the key to getting what you want this year. What is it?

* * CONSISTENCY * *

This year, make sure you stay consistent with whatever actions you are going to take to reach your goals. Do them day in and day out. Yes, it will get boring and at times it will seem like a grind. But stay the course and before you know it, you’ll have achieved what you set out to do! Remember, it’s just like the fable of the tortoise and the hare—slow and steady DOES win the race.

So instead of trying to do it all in a week, take small, consistent steps. Too many people make the mistake of making a lot of BIG lifestyle changes in a short span of time. As you can guess, they don’t stick with it because it is too much, too soon (this is why by February, most gyms become empty after being so crowded in January). Instead, take it easy and one small step at a time every single day, no matter what.

Taking this approach certainly isn’t sexy. But it’s a powerful and proven way to get what you want!

There’s Never a Right Time

Procrastination can be a dream stealer. We’ve all experienced procrastination…it’s a dream stealer. Far too often we justify it by saying, “It’s just not the right time.” The end result is that we never get started on the goals we’d LOVE to see accomplished in our life.

THAT ENDS TODAY!

I’ve come across an interesting little study that seems to explain WHY we procrastinate, and sheds some light on what we can do to stop waiting and start achieving once and for all. An international team of psychologists joined with the University of Konstanz in Germany to find out if there is any link between how we think of achieving a task or goal and our tendency to postpone it for “another time.”

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, recruited a group of students to complete a questionnaire that dealt with mundane tasks like opening a bank account. The students were told to fill out the questionnaire and email it back within three weeks. The students would also receive payment once they’d completed the questionnaire. What the students did not know is that some of them were given questions that required “nuts and bolts” types of answers, while others were given questions that required more abstract thinking.

For the “nuts and bolts” group, the questions required straightforward answers. So for example, the question could be on how to open a bank account. The answer, of course, would involve driving to a bank, talking to a teller, making an opening deposit, etc. The abstract questionnaire asked the students to think about implied personality traits. For example, what kind of person opens a bank account, or what are the traits of a person who keeps a diary?

The psychologists recorded the response times of both groups to see if there would be any significant difference. There was. Those that had to answer the questions abstractly procrastinated. Those who had to answer the questions concretely sent in the completed task much sooner. “Merely thinking about the task in more concrete, specific terms makes it feel like it should be completed sooner and thus reducing procrastination,” said the study’s authors.

So how can this help you achieve your goals and New Year’s resolutions? Simple. Break your goals down into highly specific action steps, so you don’t put off getting started. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, make a specific list of actions you can do.

For example, the first item could be to walk around your neighborhood every day for 15 minutes. Another step could be to call the gym and find out pricing. The next step could be to drive to the gym, pay the fee and sign up. In terms of nutrition, it could be to eat 4 pieces of fruit every day and to drink 8 glasses of water. You get the idea.

Remember, if you are doing something every day to move towards your goals and resolutions, eventually you WILL get there. The important thing though, is that you get started. There will NEVER be a perfect time. The perfect time is NOW.

Here’s to a new you in 2012!
